Week 2

Overview of Week:

We will continue an exploration of the Catholic and women-centered education at St. Catherine University – its history, traditions and founders.  We will learn about two remarkable women whose leadership had a profound impact on the St. Paul and Minneapolis campuses.

You will continue strengthening your critical reading skills by annotating key ideas from the texts.  The writing requirements this week includes both informal (discussion board) and formal (summary) writing assignments.  Finally, you will write about the similarities and differences (compare/contrast) from two readings, and you will learn the basics of the RTW paragraph structure.

We will address the following course outcomes this week:
  • Apply excellent critical thinking, critical reading and scholarly writing skills (including excellence in sentence level fluency, organization, voice and audience)

Introduction to Learning Video:

Critically Read and Annotate:
  • Jane Carroll, from St. Kate's History, Geography and Political Science Department,  on “Extravagantly Visionary Leadership” (Read the section entitled, "Sister Antonia: Converting Vision to Reality in Chapter 1)
  • Rosalie Ryan, CSJ, and John Christine Wolkerstorfer, CSJ on “More than a Dream” (Read the first seven pages of Chapter 1 only)
  • Deborah Churchill, from St. Kate's Liberal Arts and Sciences Department, and Thelma Obah, from St. Kate's O'Neill Center for Academic Development,  on “Opening Doors” (Scroll down to Chapter 3 of Liberating Sanctuary)
  • Review the Introduction to the RTW Method as well as the Application of RTW materials.
  • Review this APA guide, and save it to a convenient location. You will use this throughout the term.

Critical Thinking Questions:
1.       How does the character of Sister Antonia written by Carroll differ from that of Ryan?  In what ways are they similar?  How might your view of Sr. Antonia been shaped had you only read one of these sources?  Even with these two sources, is there enough historical context of how St. Kate's and the CSJs responded to crucial events (e.g. multiple civil rights movements) or are there perspectives missing?  How important is it to read multiple sources on a topic before reaching a conclusion?
2.      How did the identities of Sister Antonia and Sister Anne Joachim shape the identity of St. Kate’s?
3.      How might your identity shape St. Kate’s?

Write:
  • An RTW Paragraph Worksheet and summary paragraph of "Opening Doors." At the end of your paragraph, please provide the following APA reference citation:

  • A 6-10 sentence response to Critical Thinking Question #1

Post:
  • Your annotations for “Opening Doors” under Week 2
  • Your RTW Paragraph Worksheet and summary paragraph of “Opening Doors” under Week 2
  • Your 6-10 sentence response to Critical Thinking Question #1 on the discussion board and your response to two of your classmates with posts of 4-8 sentences
