Week 7

Overview of the Week:
​
As we continue moving forward in our Searching for Truths section, we will consider another social justice issue from various disciplinary perspectives. Environmental issues have received significant attention in recent years, but many people feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problem. It clear that while environmental responsibility must be addressed on the global stage, we also must bear the weight of these issues in our daily work as citizens. How does Catholic social teaching relate to environmental issues? How might the arts help us to understand our environment? How can we apply scientific thinking to environmental issues? As you progress through the readings and assignments this week, think carefully about how approaching these issues from multiple disciplinary perspectives enhances your understanding.

We will address the following course outcomes this week: 
  • Apply an understanding of social justice, as an active member of the St. Catherine community of scholars, with a particular focus on dismantling systemic racism
  • Apply excellent critical thinking, critical reading and scholarly writing skills (including excellence in sentence level fluency, organization, voice and audience)

Critical Thinking Questions:
  1. What are the differences between quantitative and qualitative research studies?
  2. How do Pike and Oreskes address the non-scientific community similarly or differently?
  3. What are the common themes in the perspectives of natural science, Catholic Social Teaching and the arts?
 
Write:
  • A four paragraph RTW summary of the research study you chose to analyze: 

                    -In your introductory paragraph, include the title of the article and the author.  Also,
                     describe whether the research study is quantitative or qualitative.  Finally, in your
                     thesis, describe the study and the results briefly. 

                    -In your first RTW body paragraph, write about the design and methodology of
                     your research study.  (Include a topic sentence, 2 CERs and a concluding
                     sentence.)

                    -In your second RTW body paragraph, write about the results and conclusions of
                      your research study.  (Include a topic sentence, 2 CERs and a concluding
                      sentence.)

                    -In your concluding paragraph, restate your thesis in new and interesting ways
                     given your body paragraphs.

                    -As always, include APA citations and references.

Post:
  • Your RTW summary of your research article on Week 7.
  • Your 6-10 sentence response to Critical Thinking Question #3 on the discussion board and respond to two of your classmates with posts of 4-8 sentences.
